Self-repairing rust prevention conquers corrosion
A single application of ‘smart’ self-repairing coating is being developed to dramatically extend rust protection for buildings, bridges, cars and other steel components.
University of Queensland nanomaterials experts have engineered powder-like particles that can turn water-based paint into self-repairing corrosion shields with the potential to slow rusting by more than 600 times compared with existing high-performance coatings. Nanoarchitect Dr Asep Nugraha said the particles were effectively tiny containers that released rust-inhibiting molecules to protect damaged surface of the coating.

Construction worker turnover puts Australia’s housing ambitions at risk
As Australia continues to grapple with housing supply pressures, the ability of construction businesses to retain skilled workers could be just as important as attracting new talent to the industry.
Workforce shortages continue to present challenges across the construction sector, with employers competing for experienced tradespeople, apprentices and skilled workers in an increasingly competitive labour market.

What does the truck driver shortage mean for Australian construction?
Half of all major infrastructure projects saw their costs increase in recent years, according to Infrastructure Australia data. Meanwhile, the average build time for a residential property has stretched from six to 10 months, according to the Productivity Commission.
Whether big or small, the successful delivery of projects on time and on budget is being undermined by a worrying (and growing) labour shortage in the supply chain that services it. Australia is currently 12% short of the drivers it needs to service a growing freight profile, according to the IRU’s Global Driver Shortage Report.
What’s more, 24% of the existing workforce, equating to over 43,000 drivers, is set to retire by 2030.

Why the best engineering careers aren’t built alone
When engineers think about career development, there can often be a focus on building technical skills, gaining experience and keeping up with industry trends. But there’s another factor that can have a significant impact on career success: your professional network.
For Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year winner Patrick Puddefoot MIEAust, building a professional network played an important role in his career journey. After moving from regional Queensland to Sydney following university, he found that Engineers Australia helped him connect with the broader engineering community.
Patrick credits Engineers Australia’s conferences, webinars, CPD events and networking opportunities with helping him establish himself in a new city and profession.
