A Local Leader Urges Young Australians to Step into Tradesas Apprentice Numbers Fall Short

Australia may be recording decade-high apprentice completions, but the number of new apprentices entering blue-collar trades is still far too low to meet industry demand. Hunter Valley tradie, Brad Harold, says his own story shows exactly what young people stand to gain by choosing the path to logistics and construction through an apprenticeship.

Brad began as an apprentice auto electrician with Boom Logistics in 2002 and has since worked his way through maintenance, supervision, operations and business management to now lead regional operations across NSW and Victoria. He emphasises that the opportunities available for apprentices today are far greater than many school leavers realise, yet the number stepping forward remains stubbornly low.

“If I didn’t start as an apprentice 23 years ago, I wouldn’t be where I am now,” Brad said. “There are huge career pathways in trades, real leadership opportunities, and the chance to work on major projects that keep this country running. But we simply don’t have enough new apprentices coming through, and the industry is feeling the pressure.”

National data released this year shows apprentice completions are strengthening, but new graduates are failing to keep pace with the growth of construction, energy, maintenance and heavy industry. Regions like the Hunter, where infrastructure and industrial work continue to expand, are already experiencing the early signs of these shortages.

“The safety culture in this business is second to none. They genuinely care about their people, and that’s why I’ve stayed here for more than two decades,” Brad said.

Brad credits his long-term career with the training and support he received from Boom Logistics, including leadership programs, on the job upskilling and a Diploma of Business Management.

“Working on the tools before moving into management gave him a practical understanding of the pressures, risks and responsibilities carried by frontline workers,” he said.

“Young people often think a trade locks you into one job forever. In reality, it can take you anywhere. I never imagined I’d be managing operations across two states.”

Brad, who is now raising his family in the Hunter Valley, said the region offers strong long-term prospects for apprentices willing to commit to learning a trade. He said many local young people are unaware that the demand for skilled workers has never been higher.

“If you’re finishing school or looking for a career change, this is the best time in years to step into a trade. The work is here, the career pathways are here, and the industry needs you.”

Brad hopes sharing his career journey will encourage more school leavers, job seekers and career changers to pursue apprenticeships in electrical, mechanical and heavy industrial fields, helping build the next generation of Australia’s infrastructure workforce.

Austroads and TCA publish 2024–25 Annual Report highlighting a year of impact and collaboration

Austroads and TCA have released their Annual Report for 2024–25, showcasing a year of strong performance, innovation, and collaboration across Australia and New Zealand’s transport sector. The report demonstrates how Austroads continues to work closely with its members, governments, and industry partners to deliver safer, more efficient, and sustainable transport systems.

Austroads’ research and guidance program delivered significant outcomes during 2024–25, with 101 publications produced and nine national guides fully adopted by members. These resources underpin harmonised practice across jurisdictions, improving safety, efficiency and productivity on both sides of the Tasman. Updates to technical specifications and guides supported consistent design and operations, while more than 85 active projects advanced evidence-based solutions to shared challenges. By aligning standards and streamlining processes, Austroads is helping foster a more connected, resilient and prosperous society.

Austroads modernised the Telematics Analytics Platform, reducing data latency from eight weeks to hours, enabling road managers to access near real-time insights.

Growth in heavy vehicle telematics continued strongly, with 18,403 vehicles enrolled in TCA-administered schemes – a 14% increase on last year. Industry capability expanded through the certification of four new Application Service Providers and approval of two new telematics devices, giving operators greater choice and flexibility.

TCA also reinforced its commitment to security and quality by successfully upgrading its ISO 27001 certification to the latest 2022 standard and maintaining NATA accreditation for its laboratory. These milestones strengthen the integrity of national telematics services and support safer, more efficient freight operations across Australia and New Zealand.

Throughout the year, Austroads partnered with jurisdictions and stakeholders to advance national reforms in heavy vehicle safety and driver licensing, strengthen digital foundations for future mobility, and expand training programs to improve safety at worksites. The rollout of the National Training Framework for Temporary Traffic Management saw record enrolments, with more than 17,000 workers trained – a 587% increase on last year – while over 1,500 roadside barrier installers and designers completed new safety training. These achievements were made possible through strong collaboration with training providers and regulators across multiple states and territories.

Knowledge sharing remained a cornerstone of Austroads’ work, with the 12th Austroads Bridge Conference attracting over 600 delegates and nearly 300 technical papers – the largest in the organisation’s history. Austroads also strengthened its international presence through strategic partnerships, including a new agreement with AASHTO in the United States, and continued its work with PIARC to shape global best practice.

The report also highlights Austroads’ progress in implementing its Strategic Plan 2023–27, including initiatives to improve climate resilience, support freight decarbonisation, and strengthen governance. Austroads was also recognised as a 5-Star Employer of Choice and listed among Australia’s Best Places to Work, underscoring its commitment to a positive and high-performing workplace culture.

Austroads releases recommendations to update its guides for large freight vehicles

A new report examines how existing Austroads guidance addresses the geometric design requirements needed to accommodate large freight vehicles (LFVs).  The report focuses on the physical space and layout required for safe and efficient LFV operations, rather than vehicle mass.

“Innovation in vehicle design has delivered major productivity gains for the road transport industry in recent years,” said Amy Naulls, Austroads Transport Network Operations Program Manager. “We’ve seen more larger vehicle combinations, and strong industry support for use of vehicles such as B-doubles.”

Road agencies in Australia and New Zealand support the use of LFVs wherever possible due to their potential to improve productivity, safety, and sustainability outcomes. However, the Austroads guides need to be updated to consider the dimensions and performance capabilities of current and future LFVs.

The report reviews several Austroads guides to identify where updates may be needed to better accommodate LFVs. These include the Austroads Guide to Road Design, Guide to Road Tunnels, Design Vehicles and Turning Path Templates, Guide to Traffic Management, and Guide to Pavement Technology.

The review summarises the current treatment of LFVs in the guides, the dimensions of common Performance Based Standards (PBS) vehicles – including forecasted growth and the drivers influencing the adoption of LFVs in the future.

“Updating Austroads guides to include the dimensions and performance of LFVs, including more PBS vehicles, will help increase the uptake of these vehicles,” said Amy. “Harmonising road design standards in this way can improve network efficiency, reduce the number of freight movements, and contribute to national goals such as Net Zero 2050.”

The report recommends targeted updates, particularly to the Austroads Guide to Road Design Part 3: Geometric Design. Updates are suggested for road cross-sections, lane and shoulder widths, intersections, turning paths, rest areas, and other elements critical for LFVs.

Additional updates would be beneficial in areas such as pavements and roadside safety features.
